(전혀 허황되다고는 볼 수 없는) 상상을 통해 특별한 즐거움을 주면서 현실보다 더 현실적인 실체와 마주치게 하는 거죠. 여러분은 만약 내일 전쟁 정도가 아니라 지구 최후의 날이 온다면 어떡하시겠습니까? 천국과 지옥이 실제로 있는데 그곳을 여행하게 된다면요? 예수님이 지구에 오셨던 것처럼, 바로 눈앞에서 외계 생물체를 만나볼 수도 있습니다. 지금은 잠이 들어버렸지만 중학교 때 꾸던 꿈을 다시 깨워 보는 건 어떨까요. 어두침침한 폭풍 속에서 진리의 횃불을 들고 단신으로 세상과 맞서 싸우는 개혁가가 되고 싶었던 그 꿈을. 늘 조역으로 살아가고 있는 자신의 처지를 한탄하고 계신가요. (저자의 그늘에서 저자를 돋보이게 하는 임무를 맡은 편집자들도 간혹 이런 유혹을 받는데) 주인공에 대한 시기심과 질투로 신을 원망하고 있진 않나요. “단언컨대 신들보다 인간에게 유해한 존재는 없다. (두꺼비, 전갈, 독사도 그만큼 해롭지는 않다.) 신들에게 대답할 말이 있으면 한번 해 보라고 하라. 당연히 대답하는 대신 나를 쳐서 미치광이나 문둥병자로 만들어 버리거나 짐승이나 새나 나무로 둔갑시켜 버릴 것이다. 그러나 그것이야말로 신들에게 대답할 말이 없음을 온 세상에 알리는 일이 아니겠는가?” 하고 말입니다. 그렇다면 적어도 그 고통만큼은 소설 속 인물들이 누구보다 확실하게 대변해 줄 겁니다. 세상이 찜통처럼 김을 내기 시작하네요. 진실의 얼굴과 마주하는 순간, 여러분이 고드름처럼 얼어붙게 될지 폭발하는 화염에 휩싸이게 될지 알 수 없지만, 미지근해서는 안 될 운명이라면 이열치열로라도 시원한 여름이 되었으면 하는 바람입니다.
